About the French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are compact, quiet and happy in a small flat, which has made them one of the most popular breeds in cities. They are funny, affectionate companions that rarely bark.

Their flat faces come at a cost. Many Frenchies struggle to breathe, especially in heat or when excited, and surgery to widen the nostrils or shorten the soft palate is common. If you choose this breed, look for breeders who test for airway problems and prioritise health over extreme looks, and budget for veterinary care.

Health to know about

  • Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (breathing problems)
  • Overheating — they cannot pant effectively
  • Spinal problems (hemivertebrae, disc disease)
  • Skin fold infections
  • Allergies

Care in short

  • Keep walks short and cool; avoid exercise in warm weather
  • Clean and dry facial folds a few times a week
  • Use a harness, not a collar
  • Ask breeders about airway grading (BOAS) and choose puppies with more open nostrils
