About the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Staffies are among the most people-loving dogs there are: affectionate, playful and keen to be part of everything. In the UK they are one of the most common breeds in rescue centres, where many wait a long time for a home despite being wonderful companions.

They are strong for their size and some can be reactive with other dogs, so early socialisation and a good harness matter. As with any dog, children should always be supervised. Staffies are quick to gain weight, and their short coat makes skin problems easy to spot.

Health to know about

  • L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (DNA test available)
  • Hereditary cataracts (DNA test available)
  • Skin allergies
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Mast cell tumours

Care in short

  • Plenty of exercise and chew toys
  • Careful, gradual introductions to other dogs
  • Reward-based training and lots of socialisation
  • Check any new lump with a vet
