About the Shiba Inu

Japan’s oldest and smallest native breed, the Shiba Inu is often described as cat-like: clean, self-possessed and selective with affection. Shibas are famously independent, which makes training a negotiation rather than a command, and many will never be safe off lead in open spaces.

When unhappy they can produce the famous “Shiba scream”. Gentle, early handling helps them accept grooming and vet care. They are quiet in the home and suit flats, but need daily walks and mental stimulation, and they don’t always share well with other dogs.

Health to know about

  • Allergies and itchy skin
  • Luxating patella
  • Glaucoma
  • Hip dysplasia
  • GM1 gangliosidosis (DNA test available)

Care in short

  • Keep on a lead or in secure areas — recall is unreliable
  • Brush weekly; daily during the twice-yearly "coat blow"
  • Gentle handling from puppyhood for nail trims and vet visits
  • Short, rewarding training sessions
